Inaccuracies in fine motor skills

A baby's development of fine motor abilities can be hampered by several factors, such as:

  • Poor, slack, or flaccid muscular tone
  • Irregular or excessive sensitivity
  • Absence of dexterity and motor control

The coordination of tiny muscle movements, such as those in the hands, fingers, and toes, is known as fine motor abilities. Infants who struggle with fine motor skills may find it difficult to accomplish age-appropriate daily tasks, including holding a bottle while drinking, gripping objects, and putting their hands in their mouths.

A multitude of causes, such as genetics, prenatal problems, and severe birth traumas that result in neurological diseases, can cause a delay in the development of fine motor abilities.

For infants whose fine motor skills are delayed, an occupational therapist can:

  • assisting kids in making a handshake through physical development activities
  • strengthening tiny muscles to aid in grasping small objects
  • Playthings that stimulate and positioning tools

Occupational therapists assist newborns in using their newly acquired fine motor abilities for self-care tasks,  including feeding themselves from a bottle, grasping utensils and food, and more.
